podcast #2 theory of color

The right use of color can do what?
-maximize productivity, minimize visual fatigue, and relax the body.

Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color?
- visible light

Describe white light?
equal parts of all color in the visual spectrum.

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"?
-they absorb white light and reflect the color we see.

What is a glass prism?
-a transparent triangular object that breaks white light into the color spectrum.

What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism?
-red orange yellow green blue indigo and violet

Describe hue?
-the color itself

When does white light occur?
-when all wavelengths are reflected back to your eye.

When does black light occur?
-when no light is reflected back to your eye

How color is perceived depends on what?
-the type of light

What is a color wheel?
-visual tool that shows primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

What are primary colors? Name them?
-no 2 colors can make them. red, yellow, blue

What are secondary colors? Name them?
-made by mixing 2 primary colors. orange, green, violet

What are tertiary colors? Name them?
-mix a primary with a secondary. red orange, yellow orange, blue green, yellow green, red violet, blue violet.

What are neutral colors? How can they be created?
-colors with low saturation. mixing complementary colors.

How can a neutral color help a design?
-help put focus on the other colors.

What are complementary colors? Name them?
-colors that look good when next to each other.  they are positioned on opposite ends of the color wheel. red and green, orange and blue, yellow and violet

What is color value?
-adding lightness or darkness to a color.

What is a shade?
-adding black to a color

What is a tint?
-adding white to a color

What is saturation/intensity?
-the brightness of a color.

What happens when you mix complementary colors together?
-produce a dull tone.

Describe color harmony?
-helps create visual interest and a sense of order.

What is a color scheme?
-harmonious color combinations.

Describe a monochromatic color scheme?
-uses many tints and shades of one color.

Describe an analogous color scheme?
-uses 3 colors that are nest to each other on the color wheel.

Describe a complementary color scheme?
-uses 2 colors that are opposite on the color wheel.

Describe a split-complementary color scheme?
-uses a compliment and the 2 colors next to its compliment on the color wheel.

Describe a triadic color scheme?
-uses 3 colors equally spaced out on the color wheel.

What colors are considered to be warm colors?
-red, yellow, orange.

Describe a warm color scheme?
-colors used to pop out, and get attention.

What colors are considered to be cool colors?
-blue, green, violet.

Describe a cool color scheme?
-gives an impression of calm.

Why is important to consider which colors are being used within a design?
-to get the right tone of message.
