Define typography?
-the art of expressing ideas through the selection of appropriate typefaces
Where did the word "typography" originate from?
-greek words "typos"-form, "graphy" -writing
What does typography involve?
-selection of appropriate fonts
What is a typeface?
-distinctive deigns of visual symbols that are used to create a printed image
What is another term for typeface?
-fonts
What is a character?
-symbol that makes up a type face
What is type style?
-modifications in a typeface that create design variety while maintaining the visual style of a typeface
What does type style "create" within a design?
- variety
What is the waist line and what does it indicate?
-imaginary line drawn in the middle of the characters
What is a base line and what does it indicate?
-imaginary line drawn at the bottom of the characters
What is an ascender?
-the oart of the character that extends above the waist line
What is a descender?
-part of the character that extends below the baseline
Describe a serif?
-smaller line used to finish ff a main stroke of a letter usually at the to[ and bottom of a character
How can the size of the typeface be identified?
-point size
What is a point?
-verticle measurement used to identify the size of a typeface.

What is a pica and how many are in an inch?
-unit of measure used for designing newspaper, 6

-basic system for classifying typfaces
When was Blackletter invented and how was it used?
-1400's used with invention of the printing press
Describer the characteristics of a Blackletter typeface?
-highly ornamental, elaborate thick to thin strokes
When was Old Style invneted and what was is based on?
-ancheint roman inscriptions 15th-16th century
Describe the characteristics of an Old Style typeface?
-wedge shape
When were formal scripts developed?
-17th-18th century
When were casual scripts developed?
-20th century

-resembles hand writing

- it is important because it hold all of your art, so that one day you can send it off for a college to look at.

review week 13




Proportion-  this is proportion based on the differences in size between the 2 animals
 Contrast- The yellow flowers stand out because of the dark brown leafs in the back.
 Harmony- It uses monochromatic colors.
 Pattern- There's a pattern with the little leaf looking things and the hot pink backround.

 Variety- It's showing variety because of the different colors with the ducks. It is also using complentary colors.
 Movement- It shows movement because as the picture goes to the middle, it makes it seem like it's spinning inwards.
Balance- It shows balance by the top being a white tree with a black background and the bottom with a black tree and white background.
