podcast #2 theory of color

The right use of color can do what?
-maximize productivity, minimize visual fatigue, and relax the body.

Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color?
- visible light

Describe white light?
equal parts of all color in the visual spectrum.

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"?
-they absorb white light and reflect the color we see.

What is a glass prism?
-a transparent triangular object that breaks white light into the color spectrum.

What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism?
-red orange yellow green blue indigo and violet

Describe hue?
-the color itself

When does white light occur?
-when all wavelengths are reflected back to your eye.

When does black light occur?
-when no light is reflected back to your eye

How color is perceived depends on what?
-the type of light

What is a color wheel?
-visual tool that shows primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

What are primary colors? Name them?
-no 2 colors can make them. red, yellow, blue

What are secondary colors? Name them?
-made by mixing 2 primary colors. orange, green, violet

What are tertiary colors? Name them?
-mix a primary with a secondary. red orange, yellow orange, blue green, yellow green, red violet, blue violet.

What are neutral colors? How can they be created?
-colors with low saturation. mixing complementary colors.

How can a neutral color help a design?
-help put focus on the other colors.

What are complementary colors? Name them?
-colors that look good when next to each other.  they are positioned on opposite ends of the color wheel. red and green, orange and blue, yellow and violet

What is color value?
-adding lightness or darkness to a color.

What is a shade?
-adding black to a color

What is a tint?
-adding white to a color

What is saturation/intensity?
-the brightness of a color.

What happens when you mix complementary colors together?
-produce a dull tone.

Describe color harmony?
-helps create visual interest and a sense of order.

What is a color scheme?
-harmonious color combinations.

Describe a monochromatic color scheme?
-uses many tints and shades of one color.

Describe an analogous color scheme?
-uses 3 colors that are nest to each other on the color wheel.

Describe a complementary color scheme?
-uses 2 colors that are opposite on the color wheel.

Describe a split-complementary color scheme?
-uses a compliment and the 2 colors next to its compliment on the color wheel.

Describe a triadic color scheme?
-uses 3 colors equally spaced out on the color wheel.

What colors are considered to be warm colors?
-red, yellow, orange.

Describe a warm color scheme?
-colors used to pop out, and get attention.

What colors are considered to be cool colors?
-blue, green, violet.

Describe a cool color scheme?
-gives an impression of calm.

Why is important to consider which colors are being used within a design?
-to get the right tone of message.

review week 6

What is the pen tool used for?
- the pen tool is used to create free form objects, or to trace pre-exciting objects.
How can you manipulate a path/line in Illustrator? Discuss the use of the white arrow tool, pen+, pen-, and convert too.
- to manipulate a path or line you click on the white arrow tool. then you click on the path and move it to any shape or form. you can also click on the anchor to move it. the pen+ tool adds anchor points while the pen- deletes anchor points. the convert tool helps make more extreme angles.

How can you utilize the layers palette in Illustrator?
- layers lets you word on a design, but if you add another layer you can work on a design over the one you just made without affecting the bottom layer.

How do you create a clipping mask in Adobe Illustrator?
- to crate a clipping mask you make a box over what you want everyone to see. (make sure the box is on top of everything else) then, select everything in the design. the go to object on the tool bar, scroll down to clipping mask. then click make.

review week 5

SHAPE-This element of design is a shape. this designer could have used to pen tool to make the curve and straight lines of the heart. there are many types of shapes that designers can used to help make this design. but, this designer only used one heart for his design.
LINES: this designer used lines to create a car. he/she used a mixture of curved and straight lines for this design. lines are a very effective thing to use in designs because you can create anything with them. they are probably the most useful element because you cant create a design without lines.
TEXTURE: texture is used to show that the object would feel like something if you touched. it could be used to make the object look rough, soft, smooth, or anything else. this make the object really pop off the page because it makes the object look more realistic. in this design it makes the ball look furry , so it makes the mind think if you were going to touch it the ball would feel furry.
SPACE: space is used to spread out a design. it makes you feel like there is a lot of room in your design. it gives your design many dimensions. it also makes your ojects it your design not look so crammed into one area. in this design it makes the room look a lot bigger, and that you could fit more things into there if you needed too.
VALUE: value is a very important part of graphic design. when you use different shades in your design i make sour object look like it popped off the page. value is also used to show light. if used right it makes the design really pop off the page because some of it is lighter and gradually gets darker which really makes it look professional. like in this picute it starts off a light blue and gradually gets darker to almost a black.
